We have had two sets of workshops with the children at Cedarwood were they have been able to make and program their own Lanterns. We provided a range of craft materials so they could decorate the Lanterns to make them their own. The children decided to upload and play with a simple piece of code that uses the micro:bit radio and accelerometer and means you can light other peoples Lanterns by putting a lit Lantern close, but if you move too quickly it will go out.
As we have been finding throughout our project, this mixture of indoor making and outdoor play works very well. The children spent time together creating the Lanterns with the intention of taking them outside and by the end were excited to be going out into the dark together.
